| Notes | A park based on the site of castle ruins; whilst there is no particular reason to go out of your way to go here, it is a pleasant park with some reasonably well-preserved moats and walls within Tokyo prefecture. | |
| History | Katakura Castle was located on a hill overlooking a convergence in the Yudono and Hyoei rivers. The original castle was built by the Nagai clan, a descedent of Oe no Hiromoto. On the North, South and East sides the castle was surrounded by sheer cliffs about 30m above the rivers. It appears to have been constructed as a series of three blocks, divided by deep moats, surrounded by mounds and watchtowers. For this reason, the castle's location was an important base adjacent to the old Kawagoe road and the Kamakura Road. Sources attest to the presence of one Oe Bitchuu-no-kami Morochika in the castle during 1394 - 1428 so it is believed that the castle was controlled by the Oe and Nagai Clans. There is some claim that the castle was also renovated and used by the Odawara Hojo as well. The long Ninomaru with many yokoya built for flanking fire and the umadashi are later construction types than the original and typical of Hojo castles. Katakura Castle was abolished in the 16th century. | |
