By the north entrance of Goryokaku there are several sections of walls where all the stones have numbers written on them. I think they must have either conducted some excavation or possibly fortified the interior of these walls (from erosion, age, etc) in the area and numbered each stone of the wall like this so they could be replaced in exactly the same position as where they were originally set. It's interesting that they used the Kanji character for the number 9 to distinguish it from 6. You can see some clear examples in the second row on the top left. |
