History

This was the home castle of the Mita Clan, a high ranking retainer of the Yamanouchi Uesugi clan, governor of the Kanto region. As the Hojo expanded their territory into the Kanto region, the Mita allied with the Hojo. The Mita were allies of the Hojo as early as 1524 when Hojo Ujitsuna used the castle against Yamamouchi Uesugi Norifusa, but in 1561 the Mita were allied with Uesugi Kenshin when he made his incursions into the area. When the Hojo repelled Uesugi Kenshin, Ujiteru laid siege to the Mita who fled to nearby Karakai Castle where they were defeated. After the Mita, Morooka Masakage became lord of the castle and renamed it Morooka Castle. The castle was abandoned in 1590 after the Hojo were defeated at Odawara.

Visit Notes

I visited in the end of May but many areas were getting overgrown with weeds. It was hard to identify some structures and the path was totally overgrown in some areas too. While it's not officially maintained as a park there are a couple trails and signs posted at the entrances.
5月末にはもう下草が結構伸びていました。堀が見えにくい所もありました。光明寺から登っていくとわかりやすいです。
