History

Akiyama-yakata was the kyokan (residential area) attached to the mountain redoubt of Nakanojō. The layout of the yakata was quite extensive, with a ladder-like layout of baileys separated by moats. The main bailey was elevated on a hill (now Kumano-jinja), and was surrounded by an angular moat. This moat also ensconced a second bailey adjacent (today a temple, Kōshōji), and outer baileys were situated down the slope below. The lord of the manor was Akiyama Mitsuaki. Mitsuaki, the eldest son of Kagami Tômitsu, served Taira Tomomori and married a daughter of Taira Shigemori. Following the defeat of the Taira, Mitsuaki was persecuted by Minamoto forces, and committed suicide under siege at Nakanojō in 1185. After his death his surviving wife and son buried a sutra scroll with his name on it at the old (now likely ruined) manor hall, and this sutra cylinder was unearthed in modern times, which proved the site of the yakata.

For additional information see Kai Nakano Castle.
