History

Legends say that Ota Dokan built a satellite fortification to Edo castle on this site, but no historical artifacts of a castle have been found here. Dating back to ancient times, it was a popular location on the end of a high ridge and with good views in all directions so it would make a suitable location for a castle. Further along the same ridge to the North and West there are other verified castle sites as well. In the Kamakura Period (1185-1333), the local landholder Sekidokan had his home on this site. In the Edo Period it was a popular "tourist" location to watch the river, gather medicinal herbs and to enjoy listening to the crickets of summer. Today there is a large cut through the mountain for the road, but the top is otherwise occupied by a school, park, and the Suwa Shrine.

Visit Notes
