Hajoudojou (4).jpg

History

Hajōdojō is believed to have been built by the Noda Clan, and used as a residence by Noda Kiyōji; then later Inagaki Utanosuke was castellan. The Inagaki Clan is attested in the historical record but I'm not sure about the Noda Clan. Hajōdojō possessed an inner and outer moat, as well as archery ranges and stables. It had three baileys. The main bailey was flanked to the west by the second bailey, and the third bailey protected the south and east; in the north the outer moat merged with the inner moat. There is also a neighbourhood name called 'Jito' which is thought to refer to the lord's mansion or castle. The centre of the castle is believed to have been where the temple Shōhōji is located today, and it sits on slightly elevated terrain. Lord Utanosuke was defeated in battle in 1530, and so the castle was likely abandoned or destroyed at that time, as nothing is known about it thereafter.

Visit Notes

Hajōdojō is a former castle site located in Hajōdo Township, Kariya Municipality. Little to no ruins remain, and the site is now that of a temple, Shōhōji. An explanation board about the fortification can be found at the temple, and it suggests that a 'moat trace' is in evidence, but it seems that no one can find it!
