History
The castle was originally built in the Nanboku-cho Period by the Itami clan. It was gradually strengthened through many battles around the area. In 1574, Araki Murashige, one of Nobunaga's allies, defeated the Itami and took over the castle.
Araki greatly expanded and fortified the castle and renamed it Arioka Castle. In 1578, Murashige betrayed Nobunaga and lost the castle in a 10 month siege. Ikeda Yukisuke became the new castle lord but the castle was abandoned when he moved to the Mino Province in 1583.
Visit Notes
Most of the walls are reconstructed with modern stone. See if you can find the grave stone in the section that is original. I'm not sure why this is designated a National Historic Site when there are much better sites working hard to get recognition.
