Nakao Castle (Kai)

History

Nakaojō was said to have been by tradition originally built by Takeda Nobumitsu, but this early history is unverified. In the Sengoku period, a residence was built here by Obata Toramori, a vassal of Takeda Shingen, after he was granted land here for his distinguished service. After the fall of the Takeda Clan in 1582, Nakaojō was expanded into a large fort with four baileys by the Hōjō Clan who used it as a connecting castle between Wakamikojō and Shishikujō. This is probably why the castle is called Nakaojō and not ‘Obata-yashiki’. ‘Nakao’ means ‘middle ridge’; the castle was located on a hill between the river terraces of the Sutama and Shio rivers.

Visit Notes

No ruins remain of Nakaojō, originally a hilltop yamajiro (mountaintop castle), as it was redeveloped as terraced fields. There were flags denoting the site, which was nice, and an old, faded signboard.
