Kinoshita Castle
History
Kinoshitajō was constructed by Oda Hirochika in 1469. At that time the Oda Clan were subordinate to the Shiba Clan who were the governors of Owari Province. The Oda came to represent the Shiba before eventually overthrowing them. Oda Nobuyasu, the uncle of Oda Nobunaga, relocated his base to Inuyamajō, which was a more readily defensible position, in 1537, abandoning Kinoshitajō. In 1564, Oda Nobunaga used the ruins of Kinoshitajō as his encampment during his siege of Inuyamajō. In 1606 the site of the castle was converted into a temple (converted into a shrine in the Meiji period).
Visit Notes
Kinoshitajō is probably most significant in its relation to Inuyama Castle which is nearby. Kinoshitajō is considered the predecessor to Inuyamajō. The site today is now a shrine and residential area. There are no ruins left, but there is a deep well on the shrine grounds which is said to have been used at the castle.
