Mitsugi Castle (Mikawa)
History
Mitsugijō was the moated residence of Matsudaira Nobutaka, son of Matsudaira Kiyoyasu (Tokugawa Ieyasu's grandfather), constructed in the early 16th century, though Nobutaka had usurped the manor hall from his younger brother, Matsudaira Yasutaka. When Matsudaira Clan sōke, Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, was killed by one of his underlings in 1535, Matsudaira Hirotada tried to take the reins of the clan. However, Matsudaira Nobusada, Nobutaka's uncle, rebelled, and took over Okazaki Castle, where Nobutaka joined him. However again, once Hirotada returned with the support of the Imagawa Clan, they surrendered. Nobutaka, ostensibly forgiven, then served Hirotada as an ambassador to the Imagawa. In 1542, whilst Nobutaka was away on duties, serving as Hirotada's representative during his master's illness, in attendance at Sunpu Castle (then the castle of Imagawa Yoshimoto), Mitsugijō was attacked by a former retainer and occupied. Nobutaka was killed in the 1548 battle of Azukizaka. A later castellan of Mitsugijō was Matsudaira Shigetada; the fort was abandoned in 1590.
Visit Notes
Mitsugijō is a freshly re-developed site! It's rare we can celebrate such a thing, but, in honesty, there was nothing to see of castle ruins before the redevelopment, when the site was fields (which it still mostly is) and an old homestead. And now, as the result of what looks to be a processing plant for eggs being built, a small stone marker and information board for this obscure and minor castle site was erected! So Mitsugijō's legacy continues.
The site of Mitsugijō is located in the greater township of Mitsugi (split between upper and lower parts, and the site straddles both), just west of the Ando River. The neighbourhood name is Shirobori ('Castle Moat'). To find the explanation board, just look for the man-sized cartoon chicken and 'running egg' mascot.
