History

Ashikaga Yoshiuji, the third son of Ashikaga Yoshikane, became governor of Mikawa Province following the Jōkyū War in 1221. His grandson, Ashikaga Sanekuni, established a residence in Nikki and founded the Nitsuki Clan. During the Ashikaga Shogunate, the Nitsuki Clan, despite being a very junior cadet branch of the Ashikaga, rose to prominence due to capabale leadership, and its patriarchs took on the governorship of various provinces, including Iga Province. However, their influence waned, and they disappeared from the historical record after being defeated by the Tsuge Clan of Iga Province in the early 16th century. There is a belief that Sakakibara Yasumasa, one of Tokugawa Ieyasu's top generals, was a descendent of the Nitsuki.

Visit Notes

Nikkijō is a fortified manor hall site in Nikki Township, Okazaki Municipality. It is now the site of a shrine to Hachiman. An old well can be found at the shrine, and there are earth-piled embankments surrounding it, but whether these are ruins of the residence has not been confirmed.

Note: this Nikkijō is located in historical Nukata County (analogous to Okazaki Municipality) and is not to be confused with another site of the same name in Kamo County (analogous to Toyota Municipality), both in Mikawa Province / Aichi Prefecture.
