History
The Jōkyō Uprising occured in 1686 in Azumi, which was part of Matsumoto Domain, the feifdom of Lord Mizuno Tadanao. When the domain tried to raise the tax rates to something like 70% of earnings, the peasants revolted. The revolt was lead by village headman (the village was possibly Nakagaya), Tada Kasuke, who instigated the revolt and so the event is also called the Kasuke Uprising. Tada Kasuke was executed, a martyr for the peasants. This is the site of the residence of Tada Kasuke and is now the centre of his legacy where locals still pay homage to his brave sacrifice.
