History
Tōbejō was built in 1561 by Sakai Masachika. The fort was used as a base by Matsudaira Motoyasu (Tokugawa Ieyasu), who had returned to Okazakijō the year before, to attack the Kira Clan as part of his goal to pacify Mikawa Province under his rule.
In 1585, following the battle of Komaki-Nagakute, Matsudaira Ietada renovated the castle as a defence against encroachment from the forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Tōbejō was likely abandoned or destroyed by 1590.
The castle was protected on three sides by rivers, with the largest river being the Aimi River to the west. However, that river has changed course, and probably used to ensconce Shiroyama, whereas now it runs between Shiroyama and Tōbe. Based on the names of small plots of land in the area, Tōbejō contained an archery range and a palace / manor hall. The castle was also known as Washidajō ('Eagle Field Castle').
Visit Notes
Tōbejō is a medieval hirajiro (flatland) castle site. A small shrine called Ichikishi-jinja which sits on an earthen mound said to be the remains of the castle's earthworks marks the spot, but there are no clear ruins of fortifications. Several neighbourhood names remain. The actual locales which cover the site are called Tōbe ('East Side'), where the aforementioned shrine is, and Shiroyama ('Castle Mount'), which, despite the terrain being flat, is indicative of a castle site.
