Ueji Castle (Mikawa)
History
Uejijō was the fortified residence of Ômi Fujimutsu in the late Heian period and early Kamakura period. Since the residence was built on a small hill, it was readily defensible. There is a story that Minamoto Noriyori stayed at the residence en route to Heian (Kyōto) during his campaign against the Taira. He prayed at the fort's altar to Hachiman, god of war, for victory against the Taira. In 1190, he treturned and established the Hachiman shrine on the site which stands today.
Visit Notes
Uejijō is a former fortified residence site on the border of the townships of Ueji and Fukuoka on the outskirts of suburban Okazaki. The site is now that of the Ueji-Hachimangū, another Hachiman temple, of which Okazaki has many such shrines, and no ruins remain.
