|Notes=Ueno-yashiki is a remarkably well preserved fortified residence site in Yamanashi Municipality. The residence is surrounded by ishigaki (stone walls); although these date to the Edo period, the stones are thought to have been piled around earthen mounds with medieval origins. The walls include a masugata (square layout) gate complex, and there is a waterway in front which is thought to be the remnants of a wider moat. The omoya (main hall) of the residence also survives from the Edo period, and even retains its beautiful thatched roofing. Other buildings include kura (storehouses) and a large gatehouse with a thatched roof, though the thatching on it is sadly covered. The house is still occupied by its lordly descendants and not open to the public.
|History=The Ueno Clan were provincial warriors who served as vassals of the Takeda Clan. Provincial warriors also engaged in farming, and would in the late medieval period either become dedicated warriors or have to revert to farming. After the demise of Takeda Katsuyori the Ueno may have become rōnin for a time but were allowed to maintain their status as bushi when Tokugawa Ieyasu took over the province. Lord Ueno Michitada was granted land in Iwate-gō valued at 50 koku (it seems he already owned this land but that the new Shogunate confirmed it).
