Asuke Jin'ya
History
Asuke-jin'ya was established in 1681 by Honda Tadachika as a hatamoto (bannerman) jin'ya. Lord Tadachika started his lording career here with land valued at 5,000 koku, but this was soon raised to 7,000 koku as he took on more responsibilities for the shogunate. In 1683, Honda Tadachika was made magistrate of temples and shrines for the Edo-bakufu, and his holdings increased to 10,000 koku, qualifying him as a daimyō; he then established Asuke Domain. However, he was censured in 1689, and demoted back to hatamoto, whereupon Asuke Domain was liquidated. However, the jin'ya remained in place.
In 1868, the jin'ya was decommissioned, but the buildings remained as district officers until 1889.
Visit Notes
Asuke-jin'ya is a jin'ya site in Asuke Township, Toyota Municipality. The site today is a brownfield site following the recent demolition of an old school building, and no ruins of the jin'ya remain, the facility having been demolished in 1889. There is a signboard about the jin'ya at the former school gate, and it has a map of the jin'ya's layout. The town of Asuke is historic and picturesque, and I found it rewarding looking around at the old townscape; we could consider this a jin'yamachi, like a small jōkamachi (castle-town).
