History

Ōdatejō was the original Tairajō, and was called so during its use. The castle was founded in 1483 by Iwaki Tsunetaka as his fortified residence. After the Battle of Sekigahara and the founding of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the Iwaki Clan lost their territory and it was taken over by Torii Tadamasa. Originally the new overlord located himself in Ōdatejō but with his vast domain worth 100,000 koku (theoretically) he required a more suitable base and received permission from the Shogunate to relocate his castle in 1602. Torii Tadamasa built and moved to nearby Iwaki-Tairajō. Ōdatejō is also called Iino-Tairajō to distinguish it from Iwaki-Tairajō, as both fortifications were called Tairajō during their use. The Edo Period fiefdom which Iwaki-Tairajō was the capital of was called Iwaki-han. Iwaki-Tairajō took a while to complete and as a result Ōdatejō was in use as late as 1614, but was thereafter abandoned.

Visit Notes

There is little to see here other than the flattened hilltop which forms the castle ruin's L-shaped bailey. Apparently there are traces of moats but I didn't find them. I came because it's close to where I live and I happened to be in the area with some time to spare; I'd previously gone by it several times. I'm glad I did finally come though because it's a pleasant park at least with memorial stones and as I walked around the hill which contains the central bailey I was able to get an impression of the dimensions of the castle. The hilltop is the central bailey and there are at least two more baileys around the hillside. The original castle would've also occupied surrounding flatland. The site also contains a shrine, Yudonosan-jinja.
