Kaganoi Castle
History
Kaganoijō was constructed in the late 16th century by Kaganoi Shigemochi, a vassal of Oda Nubuo. During the Komaki-Nagakute campaign, Toyotomi Hideyoshi surrounded Kaganoijō in the late spring and conquered it within a few days, first setting fire to the outer baileys and then taking the inner bailey a couple of days later. The siege left a thousand dead on the defending side, including many of high rank, though Kaganoi Shigemochi and his son, Shigemune, were able to break out and flee to safety on the penultimate night of the siege along with general Hayashi Yogorō. Hayashi Juzō, Yogorō's heir, and Chikusa Saburōzaemon, the head of the Chikusa Clan, died in the fighting. Kusunoki Masamori, aged 16 and head of his clan, and Hayashi Matsuchiyo, aged 15, another son of general Yogorō, were captured alive; Toyotomi Hideyoshi had them beheaded. The castle was destroyed.
Visit Notes
Kaganoijō is a former hirajiro (flatland castle) site in Shimonaka Township, Hashima Municipality, just south of Kaganoi village. There is a hillock with a stele on and information board for the castle. It's not clear whether the small mound is a remnant of any fortification. The castle originally had an inner and moat bailey and a ring of moats. The site today is fields and rural homesteads.
