Kagikakemonomi Fort

History

Descending from the Tsukikanekubo-toride will bring one to the ruins of the Kagikakemonomi-toride. Of this minor site it seems some earthworks remain, including dorui (earthen ramparts) and kuruwa (baileys). Stone blocks are scattered about. The site is now that of a shrine. The fort was situated upon a rocky outcropping, making deft use of rugged natural terrain overlooking a bend in the Azusa River in Aźumi village, and functioned primarily as a look-out (monomi) or fortified watch tower. I climbed down from here in my usual carefree manner, coming to a road which had been blocked off due to danger of landslides. It seems that it is no longer possible to climb up onto the mountain from this side, and it is advisable therefore to go from Shimashima on the Hata side rather than Aźumi.

I walked back to Shinshimashima Station along the Nomugi Kaidō (Route 158). The station house of Shimashima Station, abandoned in 1984 due to landslides, has been relocated to near the new station.
