History

One of several residences of Minamoto Yoshikiyo, who became the head of the Kai-Genji, established around 1130 when he relocated to Kai from Hitachi. The territory around this manor hall was Ichikawa-sō (in the Heian period, before domains, such warlords had manors). It is thought that the manor hall was not occupied for long, however, and that the Kai-Genji soon relocated to Henmi-sō after expanding their territory.

Visit Notes

I came here after walking to the Daimon Hirin Park in Ichikawa-Daimon, which is history park centred around reproductions of historical Chinese stelae. The park boasts Chinese traditional ornamentation and architecture, though some of it is quite cheaply erected, and so it was like "mogi China" for me. Near the park is the site of the manor hall of Minamoto Yoshikiyo, which is now a shrine. Nothing remains of the proto-medieval structure of the fortification, the former base of the Kai-Genji.
