Maruyama Douen Castle
History
The construction date of Maruyama-Dōenjō is not known, but in the middle 15th century it was the residence of Maruyama Nakatsukasa. Lord Maruyama is known as one of the ringleaders of the 1465 Nukata County Rōnin Rebellion. Somewhat unusually, Dōenjō was pentagonal in shape, making use of a small tributary river of the Otogawa in the south; the ramparts were about 90m in length on their longest side.
Visit Notes
What are reckoned to be the remains of the Maruyama-Dōenjō’s southern moat can still be found here on an elevated area on the northern shore of the Oto River. The site is now mostly old housing, some fields and factories. The former moat has been retained as part of a waterway, but the embankments are steepest where the castle site is known to have been. The most castle-like part looks like a damp dry moat, but running water and stagnant pools can be found along its length.
