Myokenji Jinsho
History
Myōkenji-jinsho was the encampment used by Oda Nobunaga during his attack on Kaneǵasakijō (Kanegasaki Castle) and Teźutsuyamajō (Tezutsuyama Castle) in 1570. The encampment was based around the temple Myōkenji. Nearby Kebi Shrine, alligned with the Asakura Clan whom Nobunaga wanted to capture Echizen Province from, was burnt to the ground by the generalissimo. Myōkenji's biggest religious rivals were out of the picture then. Oda Nobunaga is said to have personally led his men, including Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who is said to have set fire to the enemy's positions, on the assault of Teźutsuyamajō, capturing it. Kaneǵasakijō would fall the following day after its defenders fled. The Asakura retreated to their headquarters of Ichijōdanijō (Ichijodani Castle). Oda Nobunaga, however, then received word that Asai Nagamasa was raising an army against him in Ōmi out of Odanijō (Odani Castle) to come to the aid of the Asakura. At first Oda Nobunaga did not believe it, since he had intended to give the Asai large territorital concessions for their support, and suspected disinformation. But soon various confirmation came in; Nagamasa was planning to flank him. Nobunaga then quickly retreated back to Gifujō (Gifu Castle) via Kyōto, abandoning Myōkenji-jinsho and his campaign in Echizen. He would return three years later to destroy the Asakura and Ichijōdanijō.
Visit Notes
Myōkenji-jinsho was the encampment used by Oda Nobunaga during his invasion of Echizen. Myōkenji, a temple, was fortified and used as a base to co-ordinate the siege of enemy forts nearby. Myōkenji still stands today, though the architecture does not date to the time of the jinsho (1570). The main hall actually looks very new, but in a nice way. The temple's sanmon (main gate) is also impressive.
