Background

The Onta-bukeyashiki is a surviving bukeyashiki (samurai residence) of the former Matsushiro Domain. The residence dates to the middle Edo period. It consists of the omoya (main residence) and omotemon (front gate). The omoya has thatched roofing, with ceramic tiles on the lower outer roof. The omotemon is an udekimon (armbar-style gate). There is also apparently a storehouse but I could not see this from the road. The home is the birthplace of Onda Jūrō who had an important career in pharmacy in the Meiji period. The residence is lived in and is not open to the public. It was designated as important cultural property in 2014.
