History

Oda Nobuhide, the father of Oda Nobunaga, had been expanding his territory in southern Owari, completing his conquest of that province. Seeing an opportunity in the in-fighting of the Matsudaira Clan of Mikawa, he launched an invasion of the province in 1540, and captured Anshōjō. In 1542 Imagawa Yoshimoto, in support of Matsudaira Hirotada, sought to launch a counter-attack to push Oda Nobuhide back to Owari. However, Nobuhide went on the offensive, crossing the Yahagi River, and building Uewada-toride as a beachhead. Uewada-toride, a temporary fort serving as Nobuhide’s main base during the offensive, was then used to besiege nearby Kamiwadajō, which was the main base of the Ohkubo Clan. Following the fall of Kamiwadajō, the main confrontation between the Oda and the Imagawa coalition came at the battle of Azukizaka (‘Red Bean Hill’). Oda Nobuhide won this battle in part, it is said, due to the brave fighting of seven commanders who became known as ‘the Seven Spears of Azukizaka’.

Visit Notes

Nothing to very little remains of Uewada-toride, a temporary fort built by Oda Nobuhide in 1542 to besiege Kamiwadajō. The railway of the Tōkaidō Main Line runs through the middle of the site. There is a shrine called Tenpaku-jinja on the northern side. It and an adjacent temple have some earthen embankments but it’s hard to say if they were piled for the fort all those centuries ago.
